THE PAINLESS DOC Pseudonym for Thomas Andrew Dorsey born July 1, 1899. Recorded raunchy blues under the name Georgia Tom while at the same time laying the foundation for modern Gospel Music. Died Jan. 23, 1993. Frankie "Half Pint" Jaxon born Montgomery AL, Feb. 3, 1895. The 5 ft. 2" entertainer was active in Chicago with his Quarts of Joy and occasionally appeared as a female impersonator as he does here. He went to work for the federal government during WW II and continued until retirement. --This recording was not made at the Brunswick studios, Chicago July 22, 1929 as has been widely reported. Dorsey began to focus on gospel tunes in 1932 and it seems unlikely (though certainly not impossible) that he would have been inclined to participate at a later date given his success with religious music. Chicago remains the most likely location. Jaxon made no commercial recordings between August of 1934 and March of 1937. If a matrix number was assigned at the time of recording, it has been suppressed, L359 being applied at Associated Cinema Studios, Hollywood, in late 1936. (L359) Is Doctor Ezet In? PURE And SIMPLE --Hollywood, ca. Jan.,1937 Unidentified male and female dialog achieved a stylistic breakthrough in party records. Previous recordings were done with musical accompaniment, much as they would be presented in a nightclub. Their dialogs were always unaccompanied and probably indicate a background in radio. Their timing is superb and their material is well written. Soon Ruff & Reddy and others followed their example. Doubtless the producer appreciated the savings but this move seems to indicate a shift away from juke box orientation towards the consumer market. A catchy tune can help mask lackluster writing or uninspired singing and musical numbers lend themselves to repeated listening. Unadorned spoken routines demand a certain polish from the performers. Their first recording was a great success and was released on an impressive number of labels. In the late 1940’s a female with a similar voice and, on occasion, the same material teamed up with other partners. “Simp” did not. Only the original Hot Shots releases are credited.
